Module overview

This module will consolidate and develop your understanding and clinical practical skills of procedures and appointments, your professional skills and your understanding of your professional obligations ahead of your placement. 

Pre-requisite module/s: AUDI1009 Clinical Practicum I

Co-requisite module/s: AUDI2004 Audiological Science 1, AUDI2002 Audiological Science 2

Aims and learning outcomes

Aim

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Building on Part 1 of the Programme, the aim of this module is to prepare you for your clinical placement and career as a Healthcare Science professional in audiology and a Hearing Aid Dispenser. Specifically:
  • During Semester 1: to consolidate and extend your practical skills related to individual assessment and rehabilitation of adults with hearing difficulties (focused on Section A of the Individual Record of Clinical Practice, IRCP).
  • During Semester 2: to broaden your and practical skills to the integration of procedures and managing appointments (focused on Section B of the IRCP) as well as to introduce you to the basic practical skills related to auditory electrophysiology and vestibular assessment.
  • Both semesters: to further develop your understanding and practical skills required for (1) interacting with patients/clients and their families and (2) functioning as a Healthcare Science professional in audiology and a Hearing Aid Dispenser.

Disciplinary Specific

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to:

  • A. Perform individual procedures from Sections A1-15 (excluding A7; paed tymps) of the IRCP on individuals from a non-clinical population safely and with basic technical competence showing effective patient handling, communication, professionalism, interviewing and counselling skills as appropriate
  • B. Perform the appointments from Sections B1-5 of the IRCP in simulated basic clinical scenarios safely and with basic technical competence showing effective patient handling, communication, professionalism, interviewing and counselling skills as appropriate and identifying the need for onward referral
  • C. Formulate and justify your basic clinical decisions related to Sections A1-15 (excluding A7; paed tymps) and Sections B1-5 of the IRCP with reference to evidence (e.g. basic science, professional standards, best-practice guidelines and published research)
  • D. Explain the professional context, requirements and obligations of a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Audiology), Clinical Physiologist (Audiology) and Hearing Aid Dispenser, including professional registration and regulation, codes of conduct, health and safety, statutory & mandatory training, safeguarding, consumer protection legislation and regulation, service accreditation and improvement, and the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework.

Summary of syllabus content

The topics covered in this module will include: 

  • The Individual Record of Clinical Progress (IRCP)
  • Individual procedures from Sections A1-15 (excluding A7; paed tymps) of the IRCP with reference to relevant technical and professional standards (including BSA Recommended Procedures)
  • Appointment from Sections B1-5 of the IRCP with reference to relevant technical and professional standards (in particular the BAA Direct Referral criteria and BSA Principles for Rehabilitation)
  • Background issues to the procedures within the IRCP, including calibration of equipment, safe and hygienic working practices
  • Introduction to A17-A20 sections of the IRCP (electrophysiology and vestibular assessment)
  • Procedures beyond the IRCP
  • Report writing
  • Principles and values that guide the NHS and standards of conduct, performance and ethics
  • Professional conduct and the internet, especially social networking
  • Statutory & mandatory training update
  • Health & safety and safeguarding (legislation, risk assessment and risk management)

Summary of teaching and learning methods

  • Supporting lectures from co-requisite modules to provide theoretical knowledge of the underlying principles behind each procedure to support clinical teaching. These lectures will be provided in a formal classroom setting.
  • Supervised practical sessions and simulations for clinical teaching of each procedure. This will involve small group work of up to 6 students per group with one tutor per group. You will receive verbal feedback on your performance during these sessions.
  • Facilitated practice sessions to enable you to practise clinical procedures under supervision. This will involve small group work of up to 6 students per group with one tutor per group.
  • Seminars for the whole year group on some topics
  • You are expected to practise clinical procedures in your own time. You will be able to go to clinical supervisors for assistance.

120 min unseen written exam at end of Semester 2 assessing Learning Outcome D - students
will receive a mark and will be able to meet with the module lead for additional feedback.

The practical exams are known as Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

You must pass both components individually in order to pass the module; you must also pass each individual IRCP Section of the OSCEs in order to pass the module. 

You cannot proceed to the summer placement until you have passed the OSCEs either first time or at referral. Consequently, if you need to refer on the OSCEs, we may need to delay the start of your summer placement and add the time lost from your summer placement to the end of your spring placement in Part 3. If that happens, we may also need to delay your assessment visit in the spring placement in Part 3, which might mean a delay in you being awarded your degree (from July to September) and a delay in you graduating (potentially by one year). In summary, not passing your OSCEs first time might have the knock-on effect of delaying when you receive your degree and can graduate.

Cost Implications

If you do not pass your OSCEs first time, you might incur accommodation costs associated with an extension to your spring placement in Part 3 required to make up for any time lost on the summer placement.
